From April 14th The O3 Gallery will be presenting between here and there, a collection of new paintings on winter, weather and light by Oxfordshire artist Karen Purple.
This body of work responds to the artist’s environment, with images being found and created while walking in the local landscape, where Purple observes the effect of weather and light, noticing the minute details around her. During these walks the artist fills notebooks with words and images, using as her materials found pigment or soil, river water or muddy puddles. She then returns to her studio to rework these findings into finished paintings, which employ layers and glazes of paint to capture her experience. Purple describes this process as ‘gradually building up a painting through the act of remembering’. The repetitive application - and removal – of paint echoes not only the images she finds on her walks, but also her continual return to the same journeys.
Karen Purple studied at Oxford Brookes University,
where she obtained a First Class degree in Fine Art.
Since graduating in 2004, she has exhibited her work
all over Britain.
